Lobe pumps for high pressures and high temperatures

High temperatures, abrasive particles and viscous media can quickly put pumping equipment under pressure. Pumps used in the food industry often have to handle process media or residual products without direct contact with food. This places demands on pump design, materials and operational reliability.

A lobe pump is a type of rotary pump that can be adapted to demanding operating conditions. Choosing the right pump can help limit wear, maintain stable capacity and reduce the risk of unplanned downtime.

When the medium challenges the pump

Sugar and other viscous media can place heavy demands on a pump. The same applies to media containing abrasive particles or liquids that have to be pumped at high temperatures and pressures.

A pump that is not matched to the medium can lead to increased wear, more frequent maintenance and reduced operational reliability. It is therefore important to choose a robust rotary pump with a service-friendly design and components suited to the specific application.

Two pump series for demanding process conditions

Vogelsang’s EP series has been developed for processes where high pressures and high temperatures are part of daily operation. The rotary lobe pump features a flow-optimised, one-piece housing and reinforced components that support robust and efficient operation.

The EP series can handle differential pressures of up to 18 bar and media temperatures of up to 200°C. AirGap technology protects the gearbox from heat and potential leaks from the pump chamber. At the same time, low-pulsation pumping limits the load on the pump and connected pipework.

The VY series is a compact lobe pump for efficiently pumping demanding media. Its flow-optimised, one-piece housing has few sealing points and a low dead space. This limits the build-up of media inside the pump and contributes to stable operation.

The series covers capacities from 1 to 120 m³/h at pressures of up to 10 bar. This makes the VY series suitable for production facilities where efficiency, available space and reliable media handling are important.

Low pulsation and service-friendly operation

A lobe pump transports the medium using two synchronised lobes rotating in opposite directions. When HiFlo lobes are used, pumping takes place with low pulsation. This limits vibration and the load on both the pump and pipework.

The low dead space design also makes it easier to flush and disinfect the pump. Depending on the configuration, the pumps can be adapted to CIP and SIP processes.

The pumps can also be fitted with wear plates made from highly wear-resistant special steel. This can extend service intervals, protect the pump chamber and limit downtime.

Pump selection with the entire operation in mind

Choosing the right pump is about more than moving a medium from A to B. Materials, seals, lobe geometry, capacity, speed and differential pressure must work together.
