Water reuse and recycling show-cases in food grade enzyme production

Water & Energy StageEnglish

Water is an essential resource in the production of enzymes and in many regions water is becoming increasingly scarce. Reuse and recycling of water may be cost-efficient solutions to make sure that the water resources are managed in balance with the local conditions. However, when implementing water recycling projects with product contact in enzyme production for food and feed several challenges need considered including, food safety, certifications, costumer relations, regulations, technology implementation and operation, and handling of concentrated waste stream.

Novonesis will present two cases where reuse and recycling of water has been implemented in enzyme production, one case from Denmark and one case from USA. Combined the cases will allow Novonesis to reduce ground water intake with 1.000.000 m3 per year. The projects demonstrate that re-cycle of water and wastewater is technical feasible and can be a cost-efficient way to decouple water consumption to economic growth.
