Should you update your strategies for water management?

A logical first step in taking care of our water resources is to use less water. But in a world where water, at least in most of Europe, is basically free and plentiful, what are the drivers for industry to reduce water consumption? And what are the barriers? Competition for available water resources is increasing with the emergence of data centres and the development of power to x.

Since we all use the same resources, new strategies for water management are needed. When water is used, it will at very best, be returned at the same quality as it was received. Water use is a one-way move toward higher “quality entropy” and energy is needed to restore quality. This connection between water and energy could be the driver that change how we manage our water resources.
