Industrial heat represents one of the largest and most overlooked energy challenges: around 50,000 TWh of fossil energy are still used globally to produce steam for industrial processes, corresponding to a market worth trillions of euros annually. Decarbonizing this segment is therefore essential to achieving climate targets. This need has become even more urgent in a context of increasing uncertainty around natural gas supply and price volatility, which exposes energy-intensive industries to significant risks. Electrification of heat, combined with renewable energy, offers a viable pathway—but requires flexible and scalable solutions to ensure reliability and cost competitiveness.
Magaldi’s thermal energy storage (MGTES) addresses this challenge by converting low-cost renewable electricity into high-temperature heat and storing it efficiently in sand. This enables on-demand steam production, reduces dependence on fossil fuels, and provides grid flexibility.
