Water Treatment Process Optimization Arla Foods Alumichem

In collaboration with Arla Foods in Hobro Denmark, Alumichem optimized the existing belt filter system for treating process water from their production. The optimization has resulted in large annual savings and eliminated the special contribution.
Good results at Arla Hobro
Due to changes in production, Arla Foods in Hobro, has
experienced challenges with the load on their belt filter
system. Alumichem, in collaboration with Arla Foods, Fagerberg
and Mariagerfjord treatment plant, has solved the
problems which have resulted in Arla Foods saving the
annual special contribution of approx. DKK 1,000,000 and
created a stable treatment plant for cleaning their process
wastewater.
The problems were discovered when Mariagerfjord treatment
plant received an organic load of up to 125,000 PE in
periods, on a plant built for a load of 75,000 PE.
In order to remedy the problems at Mariagerfjord’s sewage
treatment plant, Arla Foods started an internal optimization
project. Arla Foods in Hobro therefore contacted in March
2021 Alumichem, which has carried out a series of tests
to optimize the chemical purification process of the waste
water. Today, the product AluPAC is used as a coagulant, instead
of hydrochloric acid, as well as a new type of polymer, to
collect the small flocks on the belt filter. The water quality
after purification has become so good that Arla Foods in
Hobro no longer has to pay special contributions.
